This course teaches the essential skills required by an AED operator and gives students the confidence to know what to do in this kind of emergency.
Who should attend?
This course is suitable for anyone interested in furthering their emergency aid skills, or takes part in an organised first aid scheme.
Course outline:
Basic Life Support (CPR)
Participants will be taught how to open the airway, give effective rescue breaths and perform chest compressions. All learners will be given the opportunity to practise their skills on a resuscitation manikin.
Unconscious casualty
Examination of an unconscious casualty and includes placing an unconscious person in the recovery position.
Heart Disorders
Highlighting what can go wrong with the heart and what happens when a person is having a heart attack.
Application of the AED
Students will be introduced to the AED and shown how to safely use the machine with the aid of a manikin.
Duration:
5 hours
Assessment and certification:
After completing a practical assessment successful candidate receive a certificate that is valid for 1 year.

Anaphylaxis (with Epipen) and Basic Life Support (3 hours)

Follow up first aid advisory service
This course covers basic adult and child life support skills and provides an opportunity to learn or update these skills (new resuscitation guidelines were introduced in 2005). It also covers anaphylaxis and administration of Adrenaline via an Epipen.
Who should attend?
Those who are looking to learn or update basic life saving skills and those who need to be familiar and up to date with anaphylaxis i.e. doctors, nurses and dentists.
Course outline:

Spinal Care and Immobilisation (1 day) |

This course focuses on key skills in relation to the management of a casualty with suspected spinal injury. The course includes practical situations and is underpinned by relevant theory.
Who should attend?
Those wanting a basic understanding of spinal management and immobilisation and have some responsibility for first aid cover i.e. sports coach or physio.
Course outline:
Anatomy of the spine
Provides a brief description of the anatomy and physiology of the spine
Mechanism of Injury and Trauma
Provides a summary of the main causative factors of spinal injuries and other trauma and how the mechanism has an impact on the type of injury sustained.
Basic life Support
Participants will be taught how to open and manage the airway of a casualty with suspected spinal injury. All students will be given the opportunity to practice airway management, rescue breaths and compressions on a resuscitation manikin.
Unconscious casualty
How to manage and briefly examine an unconscious casualty.
Spinal Immobilisation
Participants will be able to immobilise a casualty using stiff neck collars and spinal boards and practise the rapid takedown of a casualty from the standing position.
Duration: Approximately 6 hours
Assessment and certification:
This course is continually assessed. Students receive a certificate of attendance that is valid for 3 years.

This course provides the opportunity to learn key life-saving skills, including airway management with the addition of learning how to safely administer oxygen therapy. This is a practical course and contains some theory in relation to the subjects covered.
Who should attend?
Those who would like an understanding of key life-saving skills and who have the responsibility of being able to administer the POM oxygen.
Course outline:

effective rescue breaths and perform chest compressions.
All students will be given the opportunity to practice
their skills on a resuscitation manikin.
In addition participants will be taught how to use
airway adjuncts i.e. airways and ‘bag n mask’.

Participants will learn how to deal with mild and severe
choking for adults.
Oxygen therapy
The indications and contra-indications for oxygen. How
to safely administer and store oxygen.
