Emergency First Aid (4 hours)

Included in the course

This course provides the opportunity to learn key life-saving skills and gain an awareness of treatment for cardiac arrest and significant blood loss. This is a very practical course and contains some theory in relation to the subjects covered.

Who should attend?

Those who would like an understanding of key life-saving skills.

Course outline:

Introduction to First Aid

Provides a brief summary of the first aider’s responsibilities and how to conduct an initial assessment of a casualty.

Basic life Support

Participants will be taught how to open the airway, give effective rescue breaths and perform chest compressions. All students will be given the opportunity to practice their skills on a resuscitation manikin.

Unconscious casualty

Examination of an unconscious casualty and includes placing an unconscious person in the recovery position.

Choking

Participants will learn how to deal with mild and severe choking for adults.

Control of Bleeding

Participants will be taught how to recognise significant blood loss and how to manage a wound and bleeding.

Duration:   Approximately 4 hours

Assessment and certification:   This course is continually assessed. Students receive a certificate of attendance that is valid for 3 years.

This course focuses on key first aid skills and provides an opportunity to learn the first aid responses to the most common accidents and situations. The course includes practical situations and is underpinned by relevant theory.

Who should attend?

Those wanting a basic understanding of first aid or have some responsibility for first aid in the workplace.

Basic Life Support (Adult & Child) (2 hours)

Included in the course

This course covers basic adult and child life support skills and provides an opportunity to learn or update these skills (new resuscitation guidelines were introduced in 2005).

Who should attend?

Those who are looking to learn or update basic life saving skills and those who need to be competency assessed (certificated) i.e. doctors, dentists & fitness consultants.

Course outline:

Basic Life Support (CPR)

Participants will be taught how to open the airway, give effective rescue breaths and perform chest compressions on adult and infant manikins. All learners will be given the opportunity to practise their skills. Air adjuncts i.e. airways and bag ‘n’ mask can be introduced on request.

Duration:   2 hours. The course can be lengthened in accordance with the needs of students.

Assessment and certification:   This course contains a practical documented assessment. Students receive a certificate that is valid for 1 year.

Caring for Older People (1 day)

Falls

Discover the main reasons why older people fall in the home and how to manage a fallen person.

Respond to the needs of older casualties with major illnesses and injuries:
•      Burns and scalds
•      Fractures (i.e. neck of femur)
•      Hypothermia
•      Strokes
•      Cardiac illnesses

Duration:   Approximately 7 hours

Assessment and certification:   This course is continually assessed. Students receive a certificate of attendance that is valid for 3 years.

Sports First Aid (1 day)

The course will provide participants with the opportunity to gain first aid knowledge and skills in order to recognise and manage common injuries sustained in their area of sport.

Who should attend?

Those acting as 'Manager', 'Coach', 'Trainer', or 'Therapist' for sports clubs and for Teachers responsible for school teams.

Course outline:

The course will be tailored to meet the specific common injuries of each sport.

Duration:   Approximately 6 hours

Level 2 Certificate in Sports First Aid (2 days)

Introduction

This Level 2 Certificate in Sports First Aid is a vocationally related qualification that provides candidates with an opportunity to study and be assessed in both practical and theoretical aspects of first aid in a sport and activity environment.

Funding

These vocationally related qualifications attract funding under Section 96 and/or Section 97 of the Learning and Skills Act 2000 and are eligible to be used to qualify candidates taking part in ESF and SME funded programmes.

Qualification Aims

•      To provide candidates with the skills, knowledge and understanding of first aid to
•      provide appropriate care and manage life threatening conditions, illness and injuries
•      sustained in a sport and activity environment.
•      To offer the opportunity for those appointed as first aiders to provide quality and
•      effective first aid care in a sport and activity environment. This is achieved through
•      an understanding of the general duties, responsibilities and treatment principles of
•      first aid

Qualification Objectives

On successful completion of the Level 2 Certificate in Sports First Aid, candidates must be able to:

•      demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the duties, responsibilities, general
•      treatment principles and priorities of first aid provision to adults and children in a
•      sport and activity environment;
•      demonstrate an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology in relation to sports
•      first aid;
•      demonstrate Initial Patient Assessment and appropriate use of barriers and infection
•      control;
•      recognise and respond to life threatening conditions that require resuscitation;
•      demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the pre-existing conditions of
•      common illnesses and injuries;
•      recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of common illnesses;
•      recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of common injuries; and
•      demonstrate knowledge, understanding and appropriate use of first aid equipment.

Assessment

Candidates will be assessed against the assessment criteria of the qualification via a combination of internal and external assessment components.

•      Internal Assessment - Practical assessment of skills combined with oral questioning
•      of underpinning knowledge and understanding covering the entire qualification.
•      External Assessment - A multiple choice question paper.

Target Audience

This qualification is suitable for all people working in a sport and activity environment including sports clubs and leisure centres.

Approvals

This qualification meets the requirements for the HSE Appointed Persons in the Workplace, has received support from Skills for Health and Skills Active who will offer it in addition to the technical certificates in their apprenticeship frameworks.

Progression

The SFA has been mapped against the relevant National Occupational Standards in Sport, Recreation and Allied Occupations and Health. Progression may be achieved via a range of qualifications, setting-specific awards and units of the NVQ's in Sport, Recreation and Allied Occupations and Health.

Level 2 Certificate in Emergency First Aid for the Workplace (1 day)

Introduction

The Level 2 Certificate in Emergency First Aid for the Workplace is a vocationally related qualification that provides candidates with an opportunity to study and be assessed for both the practical and knowledge aspects of emergency first aid in a workplace environment

Funding

These vocationally related qualifications attract funding under Section 96 and/or Section 97 of the Learning and Skills Act 2000 and are eligible to be used to qualify candidates taking part in ESF and SME funded programmes.

•      To provide candidates with the skills, knowledge and understanding of emergency

•      To offer the opportunity for an individual who may become the Appointed Person or
•      Emergency First Aider to gain the skills and knowledge to provide quality and
•      effective first aid whenever the need may occur. This is achieved through an
•      understanding of the general duties, legal responsibilities and treatment principles
•      of first aid.

Assessment

Candidates will be internally assessed against the assessment criteria of the qualification using a marking guide that is externally set and moderated by FAQ. The internal assessment is conducted by the candidates’ facilitator/assessor using ongoing practical assessment combined with oral questioning of underpinning knowledge, understanding and application

Target Audience

This qualification will be utilised by people who want the right skills and knowledge to enable them to give the correct assistance while carrying out the role of Appointed Person or Emergency First Aider in a workplace environment.

Approvals

The content of this qualification meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 for appointed persons in the workplace and will qualify the candidate to take on the role of the Emergency First Aider. Candidates will still need to complete a full First Aid at Work course if they will be required to be a First Aid at Work provider.

Progression

Progression from the EFA could lead to either voluntary or paid employment in many areas.

Those looking for a hands-on course that provides the opportunity to learn and practise skills which will enable you to respond to common first aid situations or have some responsibility for first aid in the workplace.

HSE First Aid at Work (3 days)

The HSE First Aid at Work course allows for a thorough analysis of emergency situations involving adults, children and babies. Participants are given ample opportunity to practise the wide range of skills taught. This programme also covers a significant amount of theory.

Who should attend?

Nominated workplace first aiders, or anyone wanting a comprehensive introduction to first aid.

The course will give you the knowledge and confidence to deal with a first aid emergency in the workplace.

This course is legally compliant with the current health and safety (first aid) Regulations 1981. Upon successful completion of this four day course, first aiders receive certification to allow them to practice for three years after which a re-qualification course becomes necessary.

HSE First Aid at Work Requalification (2 days)

•      Accredited HSE Certificate, valid for 3 years
•      Follow up first aid advisory service
•      First Aid Refresher re-call service

This course updates the first aid skills of those who need to renew their statutory First aid at work certificate and whose existing certificate is still valid.

The HSE will allow an extension of the certificate for 28 days beyond the expiry date, within which a requalification course should be completed).

First aiders whose certificates have expired must attend the full four day First aid at work course.

Who should attend?

This course is for people wishing to renew a valid First Aid at Work certificate. The course aims to update and refresh your knowledge of the First Aid at Work syllabus, while allowing time for revision and practise sessions in preparation for a final assessment.

Course outline:

The course includes an update of first aid knowledge and skills and a revision of workplace requirements. The content of the course follows the 4 day programme.

Duration:   Approximately 15 hours.

Assessment and certification:   After completing a final assessment successful candidates receive a current HSE approved certificate valid for a further three years.
